Kelpi welcomes interns to the team this summer

This summer Kelpi have had a number of interns and work experience students join the team to gain insight into what its like working for a startup in their field. This is what they had to say about their time with Kelpi:

“Joining Kelpi at the beginning of June for 12 weeks has been an eye opening insight into the inner workings of a startup. The team were extremely welcoming and I settled in quickly. Within the first week, I was exposed to various aspects of the business, from synthesis and analysis to team meetings and presentations.

Having the opportunity to work with expert chemists and engineers provided me with a unique hands-on learning experience. Taking my skills learnt in the teaching labs at the University of Bristol and applying them to unseen techniques including Rheology, blade & spray coating and dispersions was a welcomed challenge. Exploring how to improve the sustainability of the Lab reinforced the company's commitment to sustainability as a core value.

Beyond technical knowledge, my internship at Kelpi has provided ample opportunities for personal and professional growth. Presenting my findings in team meetings and interacting with experts boosted my confidence in communication and teamworking skills. The supportive and inclusive work environment fostered a sense of greater purpose that made my internship truly fulfilling.

Overall, this internship has been a great insight into working in research and development. Working with a passionate team, I gained valuable knowledge in cutting-edge techniques and sustainable practices. I'm grateful for the experience and look forward to applying my learnings in my next steps.”

George Hull, 3rd year student studying Chemistry at the University of Bristol.

“I was lucky enough to enjoy a week of work experience at Kelpi. I am about to go into my second year studying chemistry at the University of Liverpool and have been contemplating applying for a year in industry. The opportunity with Kelpi was invaluable as it gave me the chance to experience not only what it is like to work in a laboratory, but to develop sustainable technology too.

The team at Kelpi had a genuine enthusiasm and willingness to share their knowledge and experiences which made me feel like an integral part of the team from day one. I was not expecting such an inclusive environment that taught me so much in only five days. Sitting in on team meetings I felt able and encouraged to ask questions and contribute. I also helped in the lab and used equipment I was not used to; nonetheless the team provided guidance in navigating the tools and I quickly became confident and familiar with the apparatus.

Their willingness to answer my questions gave me a huge insight into what it is like to work in chemistry post-grad. It made me feel more confident about my future and excited to be studying this growing, innovative field of science. I recommend a week of work experience, especially in a start-up as great as Kelpi, to anyone who wants to find out more about working in industry, as well as laboratory work outside of the teaching lab. A huge thanks to Kelpi for having me and I look forward to seeing the company develop.”

Maddy Bennett, 2nd year student studying Chemistry at the University of Liverpool.
