It starts with an acorn
This week, Kelpi proudly took ownership of a small plot of new, carbon-offsetting forest between Bath and Bristol. Naturally, we’ve named it The Kelpi Forest.
The plot was Kelpi’s prize for winning the Rising Star award following its work with The Sustainable Technologies Business Acceleration Hub, an initiative from the University of Bath’s Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies.
The Kelpi Forest is part of the brand-new Acorn project from Co-forest. Hoping to be the first of many such forests across the UK, the new woodland will play an important part in fighting climate change as well as supporting vital ecosystems by creating a home for hundreds of species of animals, insects and plant life.
Like their terrestrial counterparts, kelp forests play a role in the carbon cycle of our planet, capturing 75% of the net carbon fixed annually in the sea. In fact, it’s estimated that around 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are sequestered by kelp every year – equivalent to the annual emissions of the state of New York!
The reforestation of our coastal waters with kelp and other seaweeds is set to play an important role in hitting our net zero targets. Simultaneously, it will provide a sustainable resource for pioneering companies like Kelpi - working towards a brighter future without harmful single-use plastics made from fossil fuels.
