Kelpi secures second contract with L'Oréal
Kelpi is delighted to announce that the team have secured a second contract with one of the World’s largest cosmetics brands, L'Oréal. The news comes after a successful first contract which focused on material testing, with the second now focusing on specific product applications. Kelpi first came to work with L'Oréal after they won the Beyond Plastic Challenge in November 2022, where their innovative biomaterial was chosen over 140 applicants - the endorsement solidifying Kelpi’s strengths and capabilities in providing a unique, low carbon material made from renewable feedstocks, which tackles the need for a robust water barrier and longer shelf life whilst also providing the end of life benefits of being marine safe, recyclable and compostable.
Kelpi, led by a team of entrepreneurial, technical experts, will continue its work on strengthening the material’s key properties, which will contribute directly towards the ‘L'Oréal for the Future’ sustainability programme, which states that 100% of plastic materials for packaging will come from recycled or bio-based sources; and 100% of bio-based ingredients and packaging materials will be sustainably sourced by 2030. The programme aligns with Kelpi’s primary mission to eliminate plastic pollution and end the world’s dependence on using fossil fuels for plastic packaging.
The biomaterials business is already working on R&D contracts with one of the world’s largest drinks manufacturers and with the supplier to the UKs most prestigious supermarket chain.
Alongside harnessing global partnerships, the next steps for Kelpi are to focus on the scale up of its patent pending material in order to prepare for market launch which is targeted for 2025.
