Kelpi’s renewably-sourced coatings for paper and card were declared the winner of the packaging category last night in a Europe-wide Seaweed Innovation Challenge hosted by sector champions North Sea Farmers.

World Ocean Day yesterday saw Kelpi head over to the Netherlands as one of ten finalists in the competition – drawn from across the spectrum of primary users of seaweed. As well as being assessed amongst competitors in seaweed-based packaging, the competition drew in innovators in nutraceuticals, plant-based meat and seafood alternatives from across Europe.

As well as presenting to jurors from Amazon, Nestlé, supermarket group Colyrut and packaging giant D S Smith, the day allowed us to exhibit Kelpi’s latest prototypes in a marketplace attended by more than 100 clients, suppliers and partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the UK and beyond.

The event, organised by North Sea Farmers, set up to support and accelerate the development of a sustainable seaweed sector across the North Sea, and food innovation platform Brave New Foods, showcased some brilliant innovation from all the finalists – four of Europe’s leading innovators in bio-materials from seaweed and six focused on food and nutraceuticals.
