Kelpi speaks at Warwick Polymer Club 2024

Earlier this week, Kelpi was invited to speak at the Warwick Polymer Club 2024 Annual Meeting. The event brings together academics and industry to highlight both current problems and innovative solutions in the field of polymer science. For several years, the theme of the event has been sustainability, so Kelpi’s work felt like a perfect fit!

Molly McCarthy, one of Kelpi’s Polymer Scientists, spoke about the plastic crisis and the environmental issues caused by single-use plastics made from fossil fuels, presenting the concerning facts (did you know there are 30 million tonnes of plastic waste in our oceans?) to highlight the scale of the problem. We then introduced Kelpi’s solution: a unique biopolymer that is a biodegradable and recyclable alternative to single use plastics. There were a wide range of talks from both academia and industry; covering topics such as polymer recycling and novel analytical techniques to measure the size of microplastics in drinking water.

The afternoon of presentations was followed by a poster and networking session, highlighting the latest innovations in polymer research. This event was a great opportunity for Kelpi to showcase how our chemistry can help make polymers more sustainable – we hope to be back again next year!

Dr Daniel Lester, Polymer/Materials Analysis Research Platform Manager at the University of Warwick and Chair of the Warwick Polymer Club, said:

"On 11th November the university of Warwick hosted our annual polymer club networking event. We had over 100 attendees from industry and academia. We had 8 speakers on the theme of sustainability. We were delighted to have Kelpi deliver a talk that was inspiring and thought provoking and we hope to continue working with them in the future!”
